The Bombay Special Apartment

The Bombay Special Apartment
MUMBAI | INDia

Located in Bombay’s leafy neighbourhood of Malabar Hill, this 1,800 SFT flat required us to deliver on design challenges that most residential spaces in Bombay pose. With dizzying real estate prices, apartments in Bombay are usually tight spaces with a lack of natural light. To meet with this challenge, we opened up the flat to allow natural light into the rooms by not only widening the window openings, but also by breaking barriers between public rooms of the home, thereby allowing natural light to flow from one room into another. Another Herculean task was to create an illusion of a larger space. For this, we used the technique of repetition - similar design details and building materials have a continued presence throughout the space. This technique ensured that each area flowed into the next, without any interruptions, which seemingly increased the span of the space. Furthermore, the multi-tasking ability of spaces and furniture is the gold standard that a designer often aims for while designing a Bombay home. We aimed for this room after room. Lastly, our design solutions for the 3-bedroom apartment were meant to meet the requirements of 4 family members, spanning 3 generations from the ages of 11 to 75. Right at the onset, we realised that apart from taking care of functionality and aesthetics, our work would be incomplete if every room did not transform into a space that celebrated the personality of each of its occupants.
